Gayle Hamilton, J.D.
Gayle Hamilton is the Associate Director of Labor@Wayne and heads the Labor Studies Center and the Labor School at Wayne State University. Gayle has more than 18 years of progressive experience in labor education, training and development, management and human services. Additionally, Gayle holds a law degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy.
As a labor educator, her areas of interest include gender, race, class and worker rights issues as well as workplace inclusion, labor law, FMLA and ADA. While at Wayne State University, Gayle became very active in her local union and was elected two terms as Treasurer of the faculty and academic staff union represented jointly by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
Prior to joining the staff of the WSU Labor Studies Center, Gayle headed the legal department of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 79, now named SEIU Healthcare Michigan, which represents healthcare workers throughout Michigan. As Director of Legal Affairs, Gayle was responsible for representing the Local at arbitration hearings, NLRB hearings and training the staff, stewards and the union members on labor and employment laws. Finally, Gayle worked in the human resource department, as an Employee Relations Advisor at MGM-Grand.
